Eli Dart Tackles ESnet's Science DMZ
In order to help research institutions fully capitalize on the growing availability of bandwidth, ESnet is now working with the scientific community to encourage the use of a network design model called the “Science DMZ.” The Science DMZ is a specially designed local networking infrastructure aimed at speeding the delivery of scientific data. A 100-Gigabit Highway for Science
With $62 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, ESnet built a 100 Gbps a long-haul prototype network and a wide-area network testbed. So far more than 25 groups have used the 100 Gbps testbed, which is open to researchers from government agencies and private industry, to test new, potentially disruptive technologies. Twice a year, staff from ESnet and Internet, two of the leading research and education networks, meet to exchange information and experiences on topics of mutual interest. The meetings, known at the Joint Techs, also draw an international crowd of networking experts.
