ESnet to Share Expertise at Europe’s Premier Networking Conference
ESnet staff members Eric Pouyoul, Jon Dugan and Bill Johnston are among the speakers scheduled to present at the 2012 TERENA Networking Conference to be held May 21-24 in Reykjavík, Iceland. The conference, sponsored by the Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association, is the largest and most prestigious European research networking conference. Read More »
Eli Dart Tackles ESnet's Science DMZ
In order to help research institutions fully capitalize on the growing availability of bandwidth, ESnet is now working with the scientific community to encourage the use of a network design model called the “Science DMZ.” The Science DMZ is a specially designed local networking infrastructure aimed at speeding the delivery of scientific data. A 100-Gigabit Highway for Science
With $62 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, ESnet built a 100 Gbps a long-haul prototype network and a wide-area network testbed. So far more than 25 groups have used the 100 Gbps testbed, which is open to researchers from government agencies and private industry, to test new, potentially disruptive technologies. These are some of their stories. Read More »
Vint Cerf and Van Jacobson Inducted into Internet Hall of Fame
Vint Cerf (left) and Van Jacobson (right) Vint Cerf,a member of the ESnet Policy Board, and Van Jacobson, former head of Berkeley Lab’s Network Research Group, are in the first class of inductees into the Internet Hall of Fame. Cerf is honored as a Pioneer, and Jacobson as an Innovator. Widely known as a “Father of the Internet,” Cerf is the co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols and… Read More »

NSF to Help Campuses Embrace 'Science DMZ' Strategy
Many university campuses need to improve their local network infrastructure to keep pace an exponential growth in science data. This is why the NSF is offering significant funding to universities across the US to upgrade campus networks. One of the NSF’s suggested upgrades include an architectural strategy pioneered by the Department of Energy’s ESnet: the “Science DMZ.” Read More »
A New Kind of Neutrino Transformation
Neutrinos, the wispy particles that flooded the universe in the earliest moments after the Big Bang, are continually produced in the hearts of stars and other nuclear reactions. Untouched by electromagnetism, they respond only to the weak nuclear force and even weaker gravity, passing mostly unhindered through everything from planets to people. The inside of a cylindrical antineutrino detector before being filled with clear liquid scintillator, which reveals antineutrino interactions by the… Read More »
Two states climb aboard new, 100-gigabit fast train
Indiana and Ohio are the first states to take advantage of the next-generation backbone being built out by Internet2 and the Energy Department's ESnet, linking in-state academic research networks to the 100-gigabits/sec cross-country network. Read More »
ESnet Policy Board Holds Inaugural Meeting at Berkeley Lab
This month the ESnet Policy Board held its first annual meeting at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). The seven-member board was created last summer to provide scientific and executive-level advice to the Laboratory’s Director regarding the overall ESnet program. Read More »
Breaking Ground on the Computational Research and Theory Facility
Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu, along with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and University of California leaders, broke ground on the Lab’s Computational Research and Theory (CRT) facility on Feb. 1.
